Parish, sometimes spelled Parrish, was an older son of James and Hannah Mary (Self) Story. He married Mary "Polly" Duncan McManus 4 October 1823 in Tennessee. They had two children: Eliza Jane and her brother John Williams, husband of Elizabeth Poland, in Tennessee. By 1830 they were living in Illinois where the rest of their children were born. They are: James P., married to Frances Maria Dikis; Bradford Reilly, husband of America Angelo; Josephus, who married Elizabeth Herron; William Simpson, husband of Elizabeth Henry; Nancy Hannah, wife of John T. Hughes; Andrew Jackson, who married Amy Sarah Mitchell; Henry Washington, husband of Melinda Petrie; and Jesse.
