Ebenezer had sold his farm in Fulton county, Illinois during the spring of 1854 and was en route to pay for another farm in Warren county when he was thrown from his horse. He was found dead on the "Rock Island road" (now US 67) in Spring Grove township with a large sum of money in his pocket. He was buried just a few hundred feet across the Warren/Mercer county line, which was probably the closest available cemetery at that time (Spring Grove cemetery was founded a few months later). Estate sale announcements in the Monmouth newspaper read that the sale was held at his intended residence, 8 miles north of Monmouth. His estate and coroner's report are on file at the Warren county courthouse.
