Rachel was the daughter of Ebenezer Henderson and his wife Jane Lee. Born in Ohio, she moved with her family to Illinois about 1850. While in the process of moving from Fulton County to Warren County, Illinois, Rachel's father was thrown from a horse and killed in 1854.

Rachel married John Clark Gowdy in Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois on 21 December 1871. They were the parents of 3 daughters, all born in Illinois; Edith J., Mable A., and Etta Lee Gowdy. Daughter Etta Lee never married, and Rachel was enumerated with Etta in Springfield, Illinois during the 1920 census - 8 years after the death of her husband John in Ottawa, Kansas.

Rachel's brother, James Lee Henderson, is also buried at this cemetery.
