BOONSBORO - Charles Edward Beard, 71, of 10 School House Court, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.
Born Sept. 25, 1929, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late John Allen and Mary D. Eyler Beard.
He was a dairy farmer from 1951 to 1989.
He played baseball with the St. James Independent League and Funkstown Masser Motor Express Independent League from the 1940s to the '60s.
He is survived by four daughters, Cynthia L. Cordell and Barbara A. Kershner, both of Hagerstown, Jodi D. Nichans of Honeybrook, Pa., and Krista G. Leggett of Boonsboro; two sons, Charles C. Beard of Midlothian, Va., and Neal E. Beard of Boonsboro; two sisters, Helen E. Deavers of Hagerstown, and Joyce D. Miner of Boonsboro; four brothers, Jack M. Beard and L. Neal Beard, both of Boonsboro, Donald E. Beard and John D. Beard, both of Hagerstown; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Jane Monninger and Mary Leota Mullendore; three brothers, William Allen Beard, Robert Dale Beard and Edwin Lee Beard; a niece and a nephew.
Services will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene, 141 N. Edgewood Drive, Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen Guertner and Evangelist Casey Strunk will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058; or to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
