Youth Drowns In Antietam Near Rt. 40
Edwin Lee Beard, 18, drowned about 2:30 yesterday afternoon in the Antietam Creek while swimming with four brothers, a nephew and a friend near the U.S. route 40 bridge. He was the son of Allen J. and Mary Eyler Beard of Mapleville.
It was reported to Sheriff's deputies that Donald Beard, Sr., and Charles Beard were swimming in
the creek when Edwin approached the plank overhanging the water and jumped into the six foot depth. he appeared to be in difficulty and brother Donald Beard went to his rescue. Edwin grabbed Donald and the brothers went under the surface. Rising to the surface, Donald struggled to hold his brother, but was again pulled under by Edwin. In the underwater struggle to free himself and bring Edmond to shore, Donald lost him and had to rise to the surface as he was out of air and near drowning himself. Neal and John, Edwin's other two brothers, and Charles continued to search with the nephew, Donald Jr., 13, and Charles Miller, 15, after the Sheriff's Department was called.
Sheriff Charles E. Price arrived at the scene to take charge of the searching operations, using the
patrol boat. Deputies Donald Alon, Leister Isanogle and Robert Schindle were aided in the search
by Maryland Slate Police Corporal William Brooks and Trooper Harry Smith.
Deputy Isanogle located the body about five feet from the scene of the drowning at 3:20 p.m. and two youths, Ted Earley and David Ingle assisted Deputy Schindle in bringing the body to the
surface, where Isanogle and Alton took it into the boat and ashore.
Acting medical examiner John A. Moral gave the cause of death as drowning.
Assisting the officers in the search were Robert Durning, 14, Gary Jones, 15, Eddie Bowman, 15 and Glenn Frederick, 15, who took turns diving and searching. Charles Moser of Charles' Sunoco
Station called the Sheriff's Department to the scene.
The son of Mr. Allen J. and Mrs. Mary Eyler Beard, he attended South Hagerstown High School and was a member o[ the Future Farmers of America. Since his graduation he had been employed on his father's farm.
Besides his parents, he is surivied by: brothers William, Halfway; Dale, Boonsboro; Jack, San Mar; Donald, Roxbury; Charles, Milport; John, Hagerstown Rt. 1; Neal, at home; sisters: Mrs.
Helen Beavers, Middletown; Mrs. Betty Pashen, near Funkstown; Mrs, Leola Mullendore, Boonsboro and Mrs. Joyce Miner, Mapleville.
The body was removed to the Bast Funeral Home, where services will be held Saturday at 2
p.m., the Rev. Dr. Wilson P. Ard officiating. Interment will be made in the Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday and Friday evening. Pallbearers will
be members of the Mapleville Baseball Club.
