BESSIE R. BROOKS — KEYSER — Bessie Reva Brooks, 86, of Locus Street, Keyser, WV, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at Heartland Nursing Home, Keyser.

Born on November 30, 1923, in Piedmont, WV, she was a daughter of the late Melvin M. Washington and Carrie Reva (Campbell) Washington. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence R. Stewart, on Oct. 13, 1945; one infant son; one sister, Verda Thomas, and one foster sister, Laura Galloway.

Mrs. Brooks was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Brooks was a graduate of Howard High School in Piedmont where she was crowned Miss Howard. During World War II, she was employed at the Celanese Amcelle Plant and later went to work at the Mineral County Vocational Technical Center as a nutritional instructor, retiring in 1989.Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Janes United Methodist Church, Keyser, where she was a member of the Willing Workers and Church Women United. She also was a member of Unit 152, Auxiliary to Washington-Post, American Legion, Keyser where she held various offices. She was also a member of Faith Chapter # 31, Order of the Eastern Star, Keyser where she was past worthy matron. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Post # 351, VFW and Chapter # 191, Women of the Moose.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Clifton E. Brooks Sr.; four sons, Clifton Brooks Jr., and wife Barbara, of Martinsburg, WV; Raeford "Mickey" Brooks and husband Alta, James "Rick" Brooks and wife Vanessa, and Timothy Brooks and wife Renee, all of Keyser; four daughters, Jacquelyn Washington, Apryle Smith, Reba "Victoria" Brooks and Brenda Brooks, all of Keyser; 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one uncle, Keith Washington and aunt, Genevieve Gray, both of Pittsburgh, PA and numerous loving relatives and friends.

Friends were received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bill Linhart officiating.

Interment was in the Thorn Rose Cemetery, Keyser.
