VERDA K. THOMAS — PHILADELPHIA — Verda Katherine "Boobie" Thomas, 82, of Philadelphia, Pa., and formerly of Piedmont, W.Va., died Friday, October 19, 2007, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born on December 30, 1924, in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Melvin M. Washington and Carrie Reva (Campbell) Washington. In addition to her parents she also was preceded in death by her husband, Julian W. Thomas Sr., and two sons, Melvin "Dee" Thomas and Tyrone Thomas.

Mrs. Thomas graduated from Howard High School, Piedmont, in 1942 where she had been crowned Ms. Howard by the high school football team. Verda's career in the health field began in the early 1960's, and she retired from the Southeast Health Center in September of 2001. Verda was a legend in the community.

Surviving are five sons, Julian Thomas Jr., and wife Susan, and Terrence "Robert" Thomas and wife Terra, all of Cumberland; Purnell Thomas, Charles "Steve" Thomas and Guy Thomas, all of Philadelphia; three daughters, Willie Williams and husband Harold, Judy Knight and husband Charles and Melba Thomas, all of Philadelphia; 46 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Bessie Brooks and husband Eugene, of Keyser, W.Va., and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Friends and family will be received at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, on Thursday at 10 a.m. with services to follow at 11a.m.

Additional services, and interment, will be held Saturday in Philadelphia.
