His early life was spent as a sailor. At the age of 20 years he became acquainted with the Latter-day Saints in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was baptized July 16, 1843. He went to Nauvoo in 1844, and became acquainted with the Prophet Joseph Smith. He served as a member of the Mormon Battalion, marched to California, and arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. In 1849-1853 he filled a mission to Scandinavia and baptized the first convert to the Church in that country, his own brother, Peter Adolph Forsgren, July 26, 1850.
