Luther J. Black
TUSCOLA, Ill. -- Funeral services for Luther J. Black, 75, former Douglas County superintendent of schools, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Christian Church, Tuscola.
Burial will be in the Arcola cemetery. Friends may call at the Waddington funeral home here between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Black died Saturday in Washington, D.C.
A graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Mr. Black headed the Douglas County schools for 16 years until he resigned in 1943. He then became executive secretary of the Illinois State Teachers Certification Board. He was awarded an honorary law degree by Eureka College in 1957.
Mr. Black is survived by his widow, Irene; three sons, Walter, Baltimore; Ernest, Fairfax, Va. and John Robert, Denver; a daughter, Mrs. James Davalin, Chicago; a stepson, Paul Van Vickle, Lawrenceville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Warner, Arcola, and Mrs. Lena East, Charleston; two brothers, Ray, Arcola, and Ralph, of Tuscola.
