Retired 1st National Officer Dies

Henry Kneeland Phelps Jr., 76, of 133 Herndon, retired vice president and trust officer of the First National Bank of Shreveport, died Wednesday in the Schumpert Hospital after a long illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Shreveport, Mr. Phelps spent 48 years in banking participating in almost all phases since first joining First National in 1933.

He retired in 1962 as vice president and trust officer after having also served as cashier, personnel officer and secretary of the board of directors.

Mr. Phelps was a ruling elder, member of the board of trustees and past Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport.

He was a member of the local board of governors of the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children for over 30 years and was president of the Charity Medical Unit. His other activities include the YMCA board of directors, Chamber of Commerce, Community Fund treasurer and district commissioner of the Norwela Council of Boy Scouts.

His fraternal organizations included the Masons, Joppa Lodge No. 362, Scottish Rite 32nd degree and El Karubah Shrine Temple, serving as potentate and representative of the Supreme Council in 1943. Mr. Phelps was also a member and past director of the Shreveport Court of Royal Order of Jesters and a member of the Shreveport Rotary Club and Lowe-McFarlane American Legion.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Weston Phelps; a son, Henry Kneeland Phelps III of Shreveport; a daughter, Mrs. Alice P. Metcalf of Columbus, Ga.; a brother, David K. Phelps of Kilgore, Tex.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Osborn Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Henry Kneeland Phelps Jr. of 133 Herndon, retired vice president and trust officer of the First National Bank of Shreveport, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Osborn Funeral Home Chapel.

Dr. J. Frank Alexander, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, and Dr. W. Taylor Clarke, retired Presbyterian minister, will officiate.

Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Mr. Phelps died Wednesday in Schumpert Hospital.

Pallbearers will be O. D. Harrison, Dr. Leon J. Bain, G. Furman Barnes, W. Lamar Sledge Jr., John E. Kennedy Jr., Ado Skeels, Greyson Watson and Ben F. Reeves.
