T. M. Phelps Rites to Be Held Today – Former Baseball Player Brother of Utilities Head

Funeral rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. today in the chapel of Osborn Funeral Home for Taylor M. Phelps, senior clerk and accountant for Arkansas Fuel Oil Co.

Mr. Phelps was the brother of Public Utilities Commissioner L. E. (Ed) Phelps.

He died in a hospital here at 5 a.m. yesterday. He had been ill for six weeks.

The Rev. Rudolph Bangert, associate rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church will officiate, and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Phelps was an outstanding athlete in the old Shreveport High School, and he played professional baseball for a number of years before he joined Arkansas Fuel Oil 31 years ago.

While he was still in high school, Mr. Phelps was signed by the St. Louis Browns. He later played with several minor league teams and was an infielder on the Shreveport team in 1926.

He was the son of the late Henry Phelps, a deputy tax collector here for more than 25 years, and Mrs. Phelps, and he had resided here all his life.

Mr. Phelps lived with his family at 725 Pierremont.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen H. Phelps; a son, Taylor M. Phelps Jr., two other brothers, H. Kneeland Phelps, vice-president and trust officer of the First National Bank, Shreveport, and David K. Phelps, assistant cashier of the Kilgore, Tex., National Bank; a sister, Miss Karline A. Phelps, Shreveport, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers for services will be R. G. (Gilly) Humphrey, Louis Humphrey, G. B. Norwood, A. P. (Gus) Whalen, Travis B. Crow, P. Leon Rambin, Charles A. Harbuck, and Jack B. Alexander.
