Portal - Bert Scarboro, 88, died in Candler County Hospital Thursday after a long illness. He was a native of Bulloch County and was a retired farmer and member of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He was the last surviving male member of one of the oldest pioneer families of Bulloch County.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mamie Johnson Scarboro of Portal; three daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Fischer of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Raymond Oliff of Metter and Mrs. Frances Heaton of Savannah; five sons, Cecil Scarboro of Statesboro, John Abb Scarboro of Pensacola, Fla., Don Scarboro of Rocky Mount, N.C., Jason Scarboro of Marietta and Richard Gay Scarboro of Statesboro; a sister, Mrs. Blonnie NeSmith of Claxton; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Hooks Mortuary of Metter is in charge of arrangements.
