Don was predeceased by two children, Donna Lane Scarboro and William Gregory Scarboro.
Don loved and enjoyed each of his seven grandsons and took pride in each one's accomplishments. His grandsons are William Johnson Scarboro of Wilmington, North Carolina, Don Benthall Scarboro of Franklin, Virginia, Clifton Grant Scarboro of Franklin, Virginia, Patrick Kelleher Cotter of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dennis Edward Willis III of Franklinton, North Carolina, Weston Ezra Willis of Franklinton, North Carolina, and Gabriel Eamon Willis of Franklinton, North Carolina.
Don is the third child of the late Bert and Mamie Johnson Scarboro of Aaron Station, Georgia. He was predeceased in death by siblings, Cecil S. Scarboro, John A. Scarboro, Kathryn Scarboro Fischer, Karl Scarboro Olliff and Jason M. Scarboro. Surviving siblings are Frances Scarboro Heaton of Savannah, Georgia, and Richard G. Scarboro of Statesboro, Georgia.
Don enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on September 14, 1939. After boot camp at Parris Island, he served on anti-submarine patrols during World War II in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, for 32 months. After attending flight school at the University of Georgia, Don earned his wings as a naval fighter pilot. He flew everything from biplanes to jets, but his favorite was the F4U Corsair. During the Korean Conflict, he flew 88 missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three stars, the Good Conduct Medal and other campaign awards. Following his assignment in Korea, Don served as a naval pilot instructor for 2 1/2 years. While serving in a photo squadron, Don was instrumental in producing maps of the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland to the Panama Canal. Don retired at the rank of captain on July 1, 1961. Although he retired from the military, Don maintained close ties with the "Flying Peons", a retired pilots association, and the many friends he made throughout his military career. Don and his family settled in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He owned and operated Southeastern Adjustment Company for 20 years.
Above all, family came first and foremost for Don. His strong allegiance to his wife and family were honorable. He particularly enjoyed times spent at his place at the beach with his family. Don was committed to meeting his responsibilities and obligations, and displayed a strong work ethic throughout his life, which he taught his children. He was as good as his word. Don had gentle, loving ways for babies and children. He loved to cook and was always planning for the next meal.
Don and Audrey were early members of Lakeside Baptist Church. Although a private man, Don had a love of God and country beyond measure. During these latter years, Don has thrived in sharing a dear friendship with Dr. Jody Wright, minister of Lakeside.
Don's love of the great outdoors kept him in tune with the simple wonders of nature. As an avid sportsman, his weekends were filled with hunting and fishing. Don enjoyed his association with the Enfield Still Hunters Club. He could sit for hours in a deer stand watching birds, rabbits, deer and other creatures foraging. During the spring and summer, Don awoke well before sunrise on Saturday mornings and traveled with boat in tow to the Pamlico Sound or other nearby waterways. Many friendships were formed and endured for decades. He remained interested and eager to hear about changes and additions long after he gave up the sport.
Funeral arrangements are provided by Wheeler and Woodlief of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Visitation will be held at Wheeler and Woodlief on Friday, February 3, from 7-8:30 p.m.
A worship service celebrating Don's life will be held at Lakeside Baptist Church on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. Following the service, interment will be held in Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
