US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected to represent Virginia's 6th and 7th Congressional Districts and as At-Large in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1791 to 1799. He then served as a United States Senator from Virginia from 1803 to 1804. He died on December 26, 1811, in a theater fire in Richmond, Virginia. He never married.
