Richard was a Trustee and contributor for Hampden-Sydney College from 1792 until 1838. His education was received from Princeton and William & Mary Law School. He was interested in agricultural improvements, canals, railroads and education. His marriage to Mary Morton on 3/5/1797 led to the bearing of numerous children to include; Betsey, Martha Watkins, Richard, William Henry, Frances Anderson, Elizabeth Woodson & Mary. During his life, he served as a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War, and as a State Senator and member of the Convention of 1829. Supposedly his death in 1838 was caused by heart failure as he was found face down in only 2 inches of water near "Slate Hill".
