William was born at "Slate Hill" and educated at Hampden-Sydney College for which he later became a trustee from 1807 until 1823. During the War of 1812 he served as a cavalry officer under Capt. Samuel V. Allen. Frances Watkins Nantz and he were married about 1808 in Kentucky. "Haymarket" plantation was his home near Farmville, VA and it consisted of approx. 360 acres. In his will it was given to his wife during her life-time unless she should remarry. "Haymarket" was to pass to his son William upon the death or remarriage of his wife. In addition to the land in P.E. Co. in VA, he owned approx. 3,000 acres in Ohio and Kentucky called the "Crows Pond Tract". That land passed to his two daughters upon his death. His children not shown below are: Mrs. Frances Mathews Venable Flournoy (1810-1863).

Gravesite Details

First interred at "Haymarket". In 1992 his remains and others were reburied at Westview.
