Bill A. Gillis, 79, Leesburg, Fla., formerly of Erie, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at home.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gibson Funeral Home, Erie. Memorials may be made to Baby Fold, Bloomington, or the Hospice of Lake and Sumter Counties.

Mr. Gillis was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Rose Marie Dickey Oct. 3, 1948.

He retired as a machinist at the Rock Island Arsenal. He was an Army veteran of World War II, being awarded a Bronze Star medal, Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart.

He was a former baseball commissioner in Erie, former PTA president, a member of the library board, and was involved with youth activities. He was a past commander and 52-year member of the Denton-Schreiner American Legion, Erie, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Eustis Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Tina L. Penney, Moline; sons, Terry L. Gillis, Erie, B. Alan Gillis, Bloomington, Ill., and Dane M. Gillis, Moline; eight granddaughters; four great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; and a brother, Keith Gillis, Bentonville, Ark.
