I have checked Effie's death record at the Wapello County Court House and verified that her parents were Fred and Cora (Foreman) Gillis. Her obituary, which I have transcribed below, states that she was preceded in death by her husband G.W. Gillis. As yet, I have not been able to find a record of her marriage to G.W., nor can I find her living with him in any of the census records.

In the 1900 Census for Agency, Wapello County, Iowa, Effie Gillis, age 9, was living with her mother, Cora Gillis. In the 1925 Census for Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, Effie Gillis, widowed, and her children Glen, Jack, Carroll, Bill, and Betty were living with her step-father and mother, G.W. and Cora McSparen.

In the 1930 Census for Ottumwa, Effie Gillis, divorced, and her children Glen, Jack, Carol, Betty, and Keith were living with her mother, Cora McSparen. Effie's mother died August 5, 1937, and her obituary states that she died at the home of her daughter Miss Effie Gillis, in Ottumwa.

The obituary for Effie's son Glen Gillis gives his father's name as George Gillis. If anyone has further information on who George or G.W. Gillis was and what happened to him, please let me know.
