Elizabeth Richardson served as a Red Cross Volunteer in England and France. After six weeks of training in Washington, D.C., she sailed to England on the RMS Queen Elizabeth. Like many of these volunteers, Richardson heard the stories not reported in newspapers, stories sometimes not shared with loved ones back home: tales of harrowing combat and hard choices; of friends quickly made, quickly lost but never forgotten; of fear and numbing fatigue; and moments of hilarity only those that were there could laugh at.
On the morning of July 25, 1945, Richardson was en route to Paris when the aircraft crashed, killing her and the pilot. She was 27-years-old. Today, she is buried in Normandy American Cemetery, plot A, row 21, grave 5 - one of four women honored at the cemetery.
