Clarence Melvin Mumma was born in Eagleville, Missouri, September 4, 1885 to Martin and Josephine (Hobbs) Mumma. He moved to Lane County, Kansas with his parents in August 1902. They lived on a farm ten miles southwest of Dighton.

He married Mallissa Stewart on May 3, 1908. There were five children born to this union, Esther Burroughs of Independence, Marie Evans of Lyons, Carl and Glenn Mumma of Dighton, and Elmer who preceded his father in death. Mallissia died February 2. 1920

Clarence married Maggie Ferguson on June 18, 1924 and they made their home in Lane County until her death December 24, 1928.

On October 15, 1932 Clarence was married to Nellie Singleton. Four children were born to this union, Billy Dale of Independence, Kansas, Shirley Merritt of Kansas City, Kansas, Clarence Lee of Kansas City, Kansas and Janet Knauf who preceded him in death.

Surviving him are his wife, Nellie of the home, and the seven children, 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, also 2 step-daughters, Kay Allen of Balboa, California, and Rose Eaton of Riverside, California, 5 brothers, Charles of Albuguerqua, New Mexico, Arley and Ray of Healy, George of Dighton and Louis of Garnett and one sister Leeh Watkins of Garnett.

Clarence passed away July 3, 1975. Funeral services were conducted July 5, 1975 at Niles-Zenor Chapel with Robert B. Vance officiating. Casket bearers were Steve Mumma, Delmar Mumma, Gilbert Mumma, Woodrow Murphy, Roy Atterberry.

Mr. Robert Greene of the Niles-Zenor Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements at the Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
