Services Held For Early Homesteader
Funeral services for Joel Strong Hogue, 94, retired farmer-rancher of the Carnegie area, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 30, in the local United Methodist church. Rev. E.T. Cooprider, pastor, officiated, assisted by Rev. Bob Williams, local Church of the Nazarene pastor.
Hogue died December 28 in the Carnegie Hospital following a two month illness. Interment was in the Carnegie cemetery with Masonic graveside rites.
Joe Strong Hogue was born December 22 in Barnes, Kansas. He came to Oklahoma in 1902 and rode a bicycle from here 10 miles south of Carnegie to stake his claim. He was married to Emma Hartman in April 1906 at Alden. Hogue taught school at Banner and later at Alden.
A farmer-rancher, he had been semi-retiring since 1954. He was actively interested in farming until his death. He was a candidate for Superintendent of Schools in the early days when an attempt was made to secede from Caddo, Kiowa and Washita counties to for Sugar County. Hogue was a member of the Carnegie Masonic Lodge and the United Methodist Church. His wife, Emma preceded him in death in August 1953 and a daughter, who died in infancy. He was married to the former Lula Mae Downs, June 16, 1962.
Survivors include his wife Lula of the home; three daughters, Mrs. G.A. Huggins, Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Delmer Steinbock, Hamlet, North Carolina, and Mrs. G.O. Bayless, Tulsa; two sons, Harold Hogue and Kenneth Hogue of Dalhart, Texas; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-daughters, Mrs. La Vonee Barker of Lawton, Mrs. Geraldine Idlett, Arlington, Va., and Mrs. Wanda Jarrell, Clovis, New Mexico; eight step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.(Contributed by Lillian #47192135)
