OBITUARY:
Walter B. Hogue of Manhattan, a long-time resident of the Barnes community, died Oct. 5 at Hanover hospital after an illness of six weeks. He was born Oct. 20, 1882, at Barnes, the son of Clinton and Lucy Hogue. He attended Stoney school, then business school at Horton and was baptized in the Christian Church at Horton. Walter farmed most of his life in the community east of Barnes. During the years 1926-1929, he had the International dealership, then the dealership in Manhattan from 1929-1934, commuting from there to his farm near Barnes. He had been quite active until the past five years. In 1908 he was married to Gertrude L. Bowles of Greenleaf. She died in 1927. At the time of his marriage he transferred his church membership to the Barnes Christian Church. They were the parents of two sons: Robert and John and one daughter, Dorothy Hogue Balderston. Robert and Dorothy preceded him in death. In 1928 he married Genevieve Beecher who survives along with his son, John C. Hogue of Barnes; a step-son, Willis Funk of Blue Rapids; a step-daughter, Dorothy Funk McFadden, Bell Gardens, CA; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The last of his generation, he was preceded in death by eight brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were Oct. 7 at Youngberg Funeral Home in Waterville with Pastor Bill Watt officiating. Casketbearers were Kenneth Cook, Floyd Clark, Robert Moore, Albert Weichman, Cecil Mapes and Alva Zeller. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery with graveside services by Unity I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 276 of Barnes. (unknown paper and date)
