CLARION - Alfred Leland Mooney, 70, of Lamartine, a retired school teacher and illustrious poet, died at 2:50 am Monday in Clarion Hospital.

Mr. Mooney's poetry was published in leading newspapers and publications Including the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post Christian Science Monitor and The Saturday Review. His poetic prowess brought him many honors including listings in Who's Who in the East and the Royal Blue Book of London. He was a member of the Elbeetians and the Pennsylvania Poetry Society.

Born March 26, 1907, in Nickleville, he was a son of Edward and Rose Ada Watson Mooney.

He graduated in 1927 from Clarion Normal (now Clarion State College) and was a member of the Clarion State Half Century Club and Alumni Association. He taught three years in Clarington and then joined the Duquesne School District where he taught for 36 years, retiring in 1967. Mr. Mooney was a member of the Susquehannock Tribe of the Lone Indian Fellowship and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers' Association. A World War II veteran, he advanced in the U.S. Army from private to captain. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Lamartine and a former post commander of the Lamartine American Legion.

Mr. Mooney was married June 22, 19-7, to Katherine Jane Mahle Armstrong. She died in 1968.
The family will receive friends at the Gerald L Goble Funeral Home In Clarion from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm today. Funeral services will be held al 2 pm Wednesday in the funeral home with Rev. Edward M. McKee retired Presbyterian minister, officiating. Interment will be in the Clarion Cemetery. The family requests persons wishing lo make memorials to donate lo the American Heart Association.
