Anthony Haden 'the elder' was born 26 Aug 1694, most likely in Colonial Virginia. His birth date was found on a paper that was pinned to the inside of the 1803 Family Bible of John "Jack" Jouett Jr. - aka the "Paul Revere of the South", and father-in-law of William Dabney Haden s/o → Anthony Haden the younger s/o → John Haden Sr. s/o → Anthony the elder. If Anthony the elder was born in England, it's likely that would have been mentioned along with his birthdate in Jack Jouett's Family Bible. So Anthony the elder was most likely at least a 2nd generation Virginian. Anthony the elder's earliest found record is from a land sale dated 1742, indicating he was formerly of King William County, Virginia. Anthony Haden "the elder" likely died ca. 1763, or shortly after. This Anthony Haden was not known as a military veteran, but his grandson Anthony was.

A John Haden whom some say may have been the father of Anthony Haden, lived in King & Queen and then King William County, beginning a few years before 1700. He had received land from the Pamunkey Natives and later from the English Crown. The said John Haden had a neighbor named William Douglas, who may have been the father of Anthony's 1ST wife, Margaret Douglas. Although unproven as Anthony's and Margaret's fathers, John Haden and William Douglas are both listed in the 1704 rent rolls in King William Co., that was formed in 1702 from King & Queen Co.. Nothing else seems to have been found that can more definitively tie Anthony to said John Haden, or tie Margaret to said William Douglas. Most of the records from that era were destroyed in Richmond, Virginia, at the end of the Civil War when Union forces invaded the city. Anthony Haden likely left a will, probably in Hanover County, but those records were stored in Richmond, Virginia, when it burned on 23 Apr 1865. The last year Anthony can be found in a record was on the 1763 St. Paul's Parish - Hanover County tax list, where he and his 2nd wife Isabel(la), widow of John Clement, had moved to between Sep 1749 - Nov 1755. Anthony is not mentioned in his Goochland homestead's sale that his son Zachariah inherited, lived in, then sold in 1774. The last thing to keep in mind when considering a John Haden as Anthony's father is the fact that Anthony's eldest son was also named John Haden, which would go along with the traditional naming patterns of the times, where a first born son was most often named after the father's father.

Anthony Haden [the elder] did not live until 1797, as indicated in an old Ancestral File, where he is often confused with his grandson Anthony Haden [the younger] who served as Captain during the Revolutionary War, and at times his records have erroneously been mistaken as his grandfather's. Thanks to the findings of Kay Haden, in her compilation Leaves of the Tree, outright fabrications were exposed regarding Anthony, that had illegitimately claimed this Anthony Haden had 1) fought under the Great Marlborough; 2) immigrated ca. 1725 to the North Carolina Colony; 3) was the Colony's Councilor in 1733.

Ca. 1720, Anthony 1ST married Margaret Douglas, who died ca. 1746, likely at their Byrd Creek home in Goochland County. Some unproven traditions unsuccessfully attempt to tie Margaret's roots to Scottish royalty and/or to Reverend William Douglas of Goochland County. Even though Margaret's maiden name is unproven by a first-hand document, the large number of her offspring's children, grandchildren and generations beyond, that carried 'Douglas' as either a first or middle name, highly substantiates Margaret's surname to have been the same.

= = = = = = = Anthony Haden's Land Transactions in Goochland County = = = = = = =

Goochland County was formed 1728, as the first county formed from Henrico County.

Hanover County was formed 1719, from St. Peters Parrish of New Kent County.

King William County was formed 1702, from King & Queen County.

★ Nov 1742: Joseph Watson, of Henrico County, and Anne, his wife, John Watson, Jr. (son of said Joseph Watson), of Goochland County, planter, and Mary, his wife, convey to Anthony Haden, 400 acres land lying part in Goochland and part in Hanover Counties (formerly said to be in Henrico, as is expressed in patent for same to said Joseph Watson and John Watson, his brother, dated at Williamsburg, Sept. 5, 1723; half of this tract was purchased of his uncle John Watson by John Watson, Jr., by deed dated 1740, remaining of the records of Hanover. Goochland D. B. 4, p. 91. When the preceding was sold back to Watson, in Nov 1745, it's the only document known naming "Margaret". Therefore, Margaret must have died shortly thereafter since land sales in Virginia required a dower release and none can be found after this date including Margaret.

★ Dec 1743: Anthony of King William bought 200 acres from Benjamin Hawkins in Parish of St. James Northam, on a branch of Byrd Creek.

Anthony had gifted this 200 acres to his son John, in May 1747.

★ Mar 1744: In Goochland County court docs. Anthony appears as a "commissioner" relating to the will inventory of the deceased, Joseph Ballinger.

★ Jun 1744: Anthony of King William bought 200 acres from Thomas Stone on Great Byrd Creek, likely Anthony's home plantation. Anthony bought an adjoining 50 acres from Edward Rice. In May 1769. Edward Rice's will shows Anthony's son Zachariah, is living on this 250 acres, so Anthony had gifted this 250 acres and his Byrd Creek homestead to his son Zachariah. In Oct 1774, this was sold to Zachariah's neighbor John Hopkins.

★19 Nov 1745: Richard Brown, carpenter of Co of Goochland sold to Anthony Haden of said County, for £20, Tract on North side of James River on Branches of Byrd Creek. Begin a corner pine on Thomas Massie's ...thence on Arthur Hopkins ...on Henry Nash ...land on which Richard Brown now dwells, purchased by sd Richard Brown of William Matlock, 200 acres. Signed: Richard Brown [Goochland DB 5, p50]. In Apr 1749, Anthony adds to Nov 1745 sale, buying another 50 acres from Edward Rice. Anthony was living in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., when Anthony had gifted this 250 acres to his son Joseph, in Jan 1756.

★ May 1748: Anthony of Goochland bought 141 acres on Byrd Creek from Henry Nash. In Sept of 1749, he added to this property, buying 55 acres from Francis Thurston who had previously purchased this 55 acres from Henry Nash.

★ Sep 1749: Anthony added to his May 1748 property purchase, buying 55 acres from Francis Thurston who had previously purchased 141 acres from Henry Nash, in May 1748. Both properties totaling 196 acres were gifted by Anthony to his son William, in Nov 1755.

Gratitude and credit to Kay Haden for her insightful compilation, Leaves of the Tree, where she has documented in expanded detail upon Dorothy Kabler Haden's work, John Haden of Virginia (1968). Much of this biography incorporates Kay's thorough analysis of facts and tradition, which has been instrumental in qualifying the burials of Anthony Haden and many of his kin.

Biography compilation by 6X great grandson, Mark Hayden.
