Anthony Haden 'the younger', grandson of Anthony Haden 'the elder', was the first known child born to John Haden and Jean Moseley, on 26 Mar 1746, as was discovered in the family Bible of John "Jack "Jouett, the "Paul Revere of the South" and father of Elizabeth Lewis (Jouett) Haden, who married Anthony's son - William Dabney Haden. The record also had the marriage dates and names of Anthony's first three wives and their children. Anthony Haden and Jack Jouett were both mentioned in the billing records of Thomas Jefferson, whereby Jouett had guaranteed payment to Jefferson, for legal work he had done on Haden's behalf.

Anthony grew up on Byrd Creek on a northern branch known then as Elk Run (Byrd Creek East Branch) on the border of Albemarle and Goochland Counties. About a year before Anthony was first married to Drusilla Rountree, his father John purchased from Dr./Col. Arthur Hopkins, a good friend of Thomas Jefferson's father - Peter Jefferson, a tract of 1150 acres on the Rivanna watershed at Dogspoint and Burkes Creek - about 8 to 10 miles west of their Elk Run home location. Three years later, Anthony's father purchased from Samuel Hopkins - the executor of his father Arthur's estate, 2600 additional acres on Cunningham Creek, south of and adjacent to the Dogspoint/Burke Creek tract, that bordered a 350 acre tract on South Cunningham Creek, that had been granted by ♛ King George III ♛ and Lieutenant Governor of Virginia - Francis Fauquier, to Thomas Jefferson in 1763.

Anthony was documented buying and selling many properties in Virginia and North Carolina. He established at least three home plantations as a slaveholder and in one case as detailed below, held contract on an indentured servant from Ireland.

Anthony's father had gifted him land in 1777, close to his father's Dogspoint & Cunningham Creek tracts, where until ca. 1785/87, he and his brother William operated a water grist mill together, on the north side of Cunningham Creek, where Solitude Mill was built in 1856 and remains today (see attached pictures).

During the Revolution, Anthony served with his brothers Joseph, William and John Moseley, in the Fluvanna Militia. Within 8 months after his first wife Drucilla Rountree died, Captain Anthony Haden along with his younger brother - Captain Joseph Haden, were said to be at the Siege of Yorktown, under the command of Col Charles Dabney, when General Charles Cornwallis surrendered.

About a year after Anthony's 2nd wife Mary Ann/Susan Crenshaw died, he married for a third time ca. 30 Nov 1787, to Anna (Harris) Dabney - widow and 1st cousin of William Dabney (1743-1779). A land transaction places Anthony in Campbell Co, Virginia, as early as Jan 1787, close by to his father John and youngest brother Benjamin, who had also moved there a year or so prior. Anthony and Ann spent about 18 years in Campbell County, when circa 1805, they removed the family for aprox. 7 years to Wilkes County, North Carolina.

Circa 1812, Anthony and Anna moved to Kentucky. Their sons Joel H. and Nathan O. were married in Bourbon County in 1812 and 1813; and William D. was married in Fayette County in 1817. Anthony's daughter and son from his 1st marriage, Jane (Haden) Gilbert and John Haden, had also moved to Fayette County. Anthony and Anna by 1820, moved west to Christian County, Kentucky, where they were living with/by sons Nathan O. Haden/Joel H. Haden and their families, since that year's census has a male and female born before 1775, living in Nathan's household.

Anthony moved about 100 miles to the southwest to Campbell Co VA, likely a year or so later than his father, mother and brother Benjamin, possibly after Nov 1786, when his 2nd wife died. As the following land deeds indicate, Anthony's Campbell County tracts were on Seneca Creek, located a few miles east of Kingston and only about 10 miles east of his father's and brother's lands at Flat Creek and the Big Otter River. Kingston being that hamlet established by Sackville King, an old acquaintance of the Haden family from Fluvanna County, where Anthony's brother Joseph and Sackville were in charge of listing those Fluvanna citizens reimbursements, for aid they had given in the form of arms and supplies to the Fluvanna Militia during the Revolution. Anthony is associated with numerous land transactions occurring between 1805 - 1812 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, in the Brushy Mountains as well as the Hunters Creek and Big Elkin watersheds. His home on Hunters Creek would have been within a day or two ride of his Haden cousins that also lived in North Carolina, about 50 miles to the southeast, where his uncles - William and Joseph Haden, had moved to on the "Forks of the Yadkin River", in 1767/1777.

In Wilkes County court records, Anthony is listed as "Esquire", as one of twenty-two individuals sitting for the May 1807 court term. Anthony had previously been appointed with his brother Joseph, by Governor Patrick Henry of Virginia in Dec 1777, as among those nineteen justices named to the newly created Fluvanna Co. Court. See attached copy of said signed order.

The following are from Court Abstracts of Wilkes Co NC (1778 - 1815) Deed Book F & G - H; listing Anthony as seller, buyer, or witness. In some transactions, one or more of his three youngest sons are also listed → Joel H[arris] Haden, James C[renshaw] Haden, W[illiam] D[abney] Haden and a John Haden Jr., who was Anthony's son from his first marriage, who married Rachel Reynolds. He was called "Junior" since while living in Campbell County, it kept him from being confused with his grandfather, John Haden (1723-1817), who was also living there.

★ May 1812, is the last time Anthony Haden was cited in Wilkes Co Court, as he had a power of attorney on a deed to John A Smithson, proven by the oath of Charles Johnson. Anthony Haden does not show in any other North Carolina census besides the 1810, listed above.

Anthony's sons Joel H. and Nathan O. were married in Bourbon County, Kentucky, in 1812 and 1813, respectively; and son William D. married in 1817 in Fayette County, Kentucky.

Without any other records showing Anthony Haden in Virginia or North Carolina after 1812/14, means he had likely moved on to Kentucky, around the same time. Anthony is not listed as a head of household in any 1820 census in Virginia, North Carolina or Kentucky, but he was most likely living in the household of son Joel H[arris] Haden, who was living in Hopkinsville, Christian Co Kentucky, close to his brother Nathan, as there are a male and female, both born before 1775, living with Joel's family then.

★ 4 Mar 1824: Anthony Haden witnessed the Will of CHARLES GILBERT, his son-in-law, who died in Logan Co KY, when Anthony was living in neighboring Christian Co KY. The following lists Anthony, his father John & brother John M[oseley] Haden, in the legal memorandums/billing records of Thomas Jefferson. In addition, Anthony's uncle Zachariah living in Goochland County, had hired Jefferson to handle a land case of his. (National Archives Founders Online). Jack Jouett & Anthony's brother, John Moseley Haden, seem to have guaranteed payment on a debt of Anthony's . Noteworthy as well, Anthony Haden (the Younger) had filed a lawsuit against Thomas Jefferson in 1794, in chancery court to overturn a verdict whereby Haden had been ordered to pay for the legal services in 1772, 1773, and 1774, that Jefferson had provided to Haden.

★ 1780: Anthony's company documented at Albemarle Barracks guarding Hessian prisoners.

★ 1781: Anthony's company documented as serving when British Raiders under then Colonel, General Banastre Tarleton, invaded Virginia and continued on to Albemarle/Fluvanna Counties to try and capture then Governor Jefferson & Virginia Legislators, wherein the future father-in-law (Capt Jack Jouett) of Anthony's son William Dabney Haden, would make his heroic ride to warn Jefferson before Tarleton's arrival.

The Revolutionary Pension Application of Daniel Thacker of Fluvanna Co VA, 18 Oct 1833, mentions that he marched from Fluvanna to Hillsborough, North Carolina, in a company under the command of JOSEPH HADEN and then In 1781, he joined a company under Capt. Anthony Haden from Fluvanna, marching through the lower part of Virginia pursuing the enemy through the counties of Culpeper, Orange, Louisa & Fluvanna and to then onto Yorktown, returning to Richmond where he was then discharged by the Col. [Charles] Dabney, who commanded the detachment. The pension claim filed by Anthony's son, Elder Joel Harris Haden, also claims Anthony Haden participated during the Siege of Yorktown, as indicated below....

"State of Kentucky, County of Christian:

Haden the eldest of the children of Said Anthony & Anna Hadon who is a resident of the state of Missouri that he is a minister of the gospel and a man of high standing, and further that he is a disenterested [sic] witness and that the word "from" was erased before signing. [signedJ le Prewett]"

On 17 Sep 1853, the Pension Office Letter was received by William H. Wells, which stated, I have examined the papers transmitted for the service of Anthony Haden under the Act 7 Jun 1832. There is no law under which grandchildren are entitled to a pension but may be payable to a child or children.

Gratitude and credit to Kay Haden for her insightful compilation, Leaves of the Tree, where she has documented in expanded detail upon Dorothy Kabler Haden's work - John Haden of Virginia (1968). Much of this biography incorporates Kay's thorough analysis of facts and tradition, which has been instrumental in narrowing down the resting place of Anthony Haden and many of his kin.

This was likely close to the time when Anthony moves on to Kentucky, as the request he made to move slaves from NC to VA, occurred a year and a half prior.

Haden, James Haden, Sibellow Haden and Sally Ann Haden, that Said Anthony Haden and Anna his wife during the period of his acquaintance lived together as man and wife and were so known and respected That he knows said Anthony Hadon was an officer in the war of the Revolution, and predicates his knowledge upon the following facts, to wit, that he has heard Said Anthony relate many incidents connected with said war; speak of his intimacy with General Marquis de Lafayette, and sound to be familiar with his character and habits, which acquaintance was clearly demonstrated, when General Lafayette visited the United States after the war; by their meeting in Nashville Tennessee when General Lafayette in a large crowded room without an introduction on seeing Said Anthony exclaimed "Captain Haden, Captain Haden" and the two embraced with eyes flowing with tears, what he has heard said Anthony speak of being paymaster that he has seen papers in said Anthony's possession relating to said war amongst the rest a Captains Commission, that Said Anthony was from the State of Virginia and other circumstances which confirms him is his knowledge.

He further declares that he is acquainted with Joel H. Haden the eldest of the children of Said Anthony & Anna Hadon who is a resident of the state of Missouri that he is a minister of the gospel and a man of high standing, and further that he is a disenterested [sic] witness and that the word "from" was erased before signing.
