Joseph was born October 3, 1940 in Maddock, North Dakota, the son of Bettie Jo Moorehead and Joseph Jasper Maddock. Joseph's parents were married Mar 12, 1940 at Yuma, Arizona. Joseph's mother was 17 years old, a resident of Lomita California and his father was 21, a resident of Torrance, California.

As a little boy and youth, Joseph was between Ohio and Southern California frequently. His mother's Aunt's lived in and around Torrance. His mother, Bettie, brought him via auto and train, as she could afford. He was known as Joe Harley most of his childhood years.

By the age of 4, Joseph became the adopted son of Charles Vernon Schumacher of Columbus, Ohio. Vernon Schumacher had married Joe's mother, Bettie in about 1941, and wanted to raise Joe as his own.

Joseph was a graduate of Canal Winchester High School, class of 1958. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, on the USS Herbert J. Thomas, a Gearing-class destroyer. Joseph participated in raising the first U.S. Flag over Alaska in 1959. He continued his service to his country in the Naval Reserve from 1961-1964.

Joe’s trade was the automotive business from management to service director to sales to the owner of his own business.

He was a member of First Community Church of Buckeye Lake, Ohio, he loved his church family especially his pastors. He was an avid fisherman and Ohio State University Buckeye fan.
