A $1 million gift from the family of the Rev. Dr. Nicholas J. Langenfeld has established a professorship in his name in social research at Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Service, the university president, the Rev. James C. Finlay, announced yesterday at a ceremony at Fordham's Lincoln Center campus.
Father Langenfeld, now 82 years old and a Manhattan resident, taught research methodology and was the school's research director from 1934 to 1967.
A brother of Father Langenfeld, Edward, 72, represented the family at the ceremony. The Langenfeld professor has not yet been selected, university officials said

The Rev. Nicholas J. Langenfeld, a retired professor of social welfare at Fordham University, died Thursday at the Jesuit Infirmary at the university's campus in the Bronx. Father Langenfeld, who lived in Manhattan, was 93.
The cause was cardiac arrest, said Linda Sollars, a cousin.
Father Langenfeld began his tenure at Fordham in 1934, teaching a course in social work and religion. He retired in 1967. In 1983 the university established the Rev. Dr. Nicholas J. Langenfeld Chair in Social Research.
He graduated from St. Lawrence College in Mount Calvary, Wis., in 1922 and was ordained in Green Bay, Wis., in 1926. He received a doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1931.
He is survived by a sister, Rose Feldner of Milwaukee.

, of New York, N.Y., professor emeritus of the Fordham Graduate School of Social Services, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 1994.
He was born Aug. 11, 1901, in Marytown, a son of John and Theresa Brost Langenfeld.
He graduated from St. Lawrence College in 1922 and received a master's degree from St. Francis Seminary. In 1926, he was ordained in St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Green Bay, and served as assistant pastor to St. Mary Parish. In 1929, he was granted leave to pursue studies in Europe. While abroad, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1931 from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome; J.C.D. in 1932 from the Collegio Angelico, Rome; Licentiate in social and political sciences in 1933 from the University of Louvain, Belgium; and a diploma from the Academy of International Law at the Hague.
In 1934, the Rev. Langenfeld began his association with Fordham University when he pioneered a course in social work and religion. In 1935, he was appointed director of research. In
1954, Fordham University awarded him the Medal of Merit, and in 1988, the President's Medal. He retired from teaching in 1967 after 33 years of service. In 1983, his 50-year connection with Fordham was marked by the establishment of the Rev. Dr. Nicholas J. Langenfeld Chair in Social Research.
He had been a resident of New York City for 60 years.
Survivors include one sister, Rose Feldner; one sister-in-law, Mary Grace Langenfeld; many nieces and nephews; and Linda Langenfeld Sollars and her husband Gordon, who enjoyed, loved and cared for him through his final years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein, with Bishop Robert Banks officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery, New Holstein. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Monday to the hour of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Holy Rosary Parish, New Holstein.
