JOHN WILLIAM BRUMMITT
Services will be held at the Bartholomew Funeral home at 2:30 p. m., Tuesday for John William Brummitt, 96, a former resident of Valparaiso and Porter county, who died in Pasadena, Calif., Friday. The Rev. Charles M. Smith, pastor of the First Methodist church of Valparaiso will officiate and burial will be in the family lot at Graceland cemetery. Brummitt was born near Furnessville in Pine township on Sept. 12, 1859, the second son of William and Mary Lucas Brummitt, natives of Yorkshire, England, who came to Porter county in the pioneer days.
He married Emma Newman of Furnessville, who preceded him in death in 1926. Surviving are one son, the Rev. Howard W. Brummitt, Henry, Illinois; four daughters, Mrs. Pearl Winneguth, Los Angeles; Mrs. Jessie James, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif.; Miss Mabel Brummitt, Orlando, Fla.; and Mrs Geneva Ray, Hobart, Indiana. Three children, John, Estella, and Grace, preceded him in death. Three other children died in infancy.
Brummitt is also survived by three grandchildren; seven great - grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Mark and Arthur, and by his sisters, Mrs. Marie Brown, Mrs. Jennie Goodykoontz, and Mrs. Emily Loring. Brummitt was engaged in farming in Pine township until 1896, when he moved his family to a farm in Center township, three miles northwest of Valparaiso. In 1906, he retired from farming and moved to Valparaiso to a ...v. - ???
He was one of the organizers and the first president of the Porter County Farmers Insurance company. Since 1941, Brummitt had lived in los Angeles, where he was an ? Morgan Township school, active member of the Asbury Methodist Church, and a vocational agriculture instructor. He made frequent visits to Valparaiso and vicinity.
