Former Teacher And Active Clubwoman Dies At Hospital

Mrs. Emily Brummitt Loring, 80, widow of the late Hannibal H. Loring, former judge of Porter circuit court, one-time president of First State Bank of Valparaiso and identified with the Porter county school system and Porter county legal fraternity, died at 1:15 a.m. today in Porter Memorial hospital. She had been in ill health for more than a year.
The decedent was born near Furnessville, in Pine township, Porter county, on June 4, 1865, the daughter of William and Mary Brummitt, who were born and married in Yorkshire, England, and came to Porter county in the pioneer days.
Taught In Schools
She received her educational training at Valparaiso university and taught for a number of years in the public schools of Porter county. While teaching she became acquainted with Hannibal H. Loring, the county superintendent of schools. Their friendship ripened into love and they were married on Aug. 23, 1892. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1936.
To this union were born three children, Mrs. Walter Q. Fitch, at present instructor in political science at Purdue university; Bruce B. Loring, well-known attorney and banker, who died Oct. 19, 1940, and Dr. Mark L. Loring, of Valparaiso.
Grandchildren Survive
Surviving besides the daughter and son, are two grandchildren, Mrs. Richard M. Conley, Redwood City, Calif., and Miss Nancy Loring, Valparaiso; two great-grandchildren, Walter Leslie Conley and Linda Loring Conley, of Redwood City, Calif.; two brothers, John W. Brummitt, Los Angeles, Calif., and Arthur Brummitt, Sr., New Carlisle, Ind., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Loring was a member of the First Christian church of this city, and was active in all its organizations, including the Kings Daughters. She was a charter member of the Valparaiso Woman's club and was affiliated with the Order of Eastern Star.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the family resident, 305 Lafayette street with the Rev. Edward W. Strecker and the Rev. Stanley L. Shippey officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.
Friends may call at the Loring home Sunday afternoon and evening and up until time of services.
