Katherine Schaefer was the oldest child and only girl born to Frederick Schaefer and Eleanore Schulz. Her mother died when Katherine was a young lady and she and her brothers were taken in by three different St Boniface Catholic church families. Katherine lived with Daniel and Josephine Glock and their young daughter. Daniel ran a butcher shop. She is identified in Josephine's obituary as a foster daughter. Katherine named several of her daughters for Josephine and her daughters.
Katherine Schaefer married Leo Zettwoch and they had 9 children, eight girls and one son who died at childbirth. While Leo ran a Butcher shop, Katherine managed a millinery shop where her daughters made hats. She was adored by her daughters and her granddaughters Katherine was an active supporter of the St Vincent's Orphan Society branch at St Boniface Catholic Church. There is some family lore that indicates Katherine and her brothers may have been orphans for a time after the death of their mother and before they went to live with their respective care giving families. Family lore also says that her father died shortly after her mother died but there is no record to indicate such. The Helen Schaefer who died in 1865 and is buried at Sts P & P is believe to be Kathrine's mother.
