Joseph Schaefer was the second child born to Frederick and Eleanore (Schulz) Schaefer. His parents died when he was young and he and his brother and sister were raised by St Boniface Catholic Church Families. Joseph was raised by Henry and Catherine Neimeyer a long time St Louis family. The relationship seemed to be affectionate, census records indicate the family considered him their son.
