R. J. WINTON was born at Bowie, Montague County, Texas, on 26 October 1916. He was the son of Albert Thornton Winton (1875-1961) and Mattie Bedford Smith Winton (1884-1922).

The family moved to Jefferson County, Oklahoma, when he was a year old. His mother died when he was five, and he grew up in the home of his father with his sisters, his half-brothers and a half-sister, in the Riverview community southwest of Waurika. After leaving school, he was employed by Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company in Duncan, Oklahoma, and in the grocery of his sister and brother-in-law in Borger, Texas, Holt's Food Store.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army in September, 1943, and married Nellie Ruth King at Waurika in early 1944. They had a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, whom he never saw.

He trained in a tank battalion, but was later transferred to the glider infantry. He was with the Third Army of General George C. Patton.

R. J. was killed in the World War II Battle of the Bulge in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously. He is buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery & Memorial at Hamm, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe. General Patton, his commander, was buried in the same cemetery. Winton's grave marker there reads:

His family consisted of his wife, Nellie Ruth King Winton (1923-1998); his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Winton (1944- ); his father, Albert Thornton Winton (1875-1961); his mother, Mattie Bedford Smith Winton, then deceased (1884-1922); his sisters: Oma Winton, then deceased (1912-1924), Alice Winton Holt (1913-1989), Ada Winton Frost, then deceased (1914-1935), Elizabeth Winton Newberry (1915-1986), Lois Winton Kafer (1918-1997); his brother, Infant Boy Winton, then deceased (1920-1920); his half-brothers, Loyd Franklin Winton (1901-1993), Leland Harris Winton (1905-1985), and Stephen Winton, then deceased (1906-1906); and his half-sister, Cleo Winton Sanders Taylor LaPlante (1903-1996).

Serving with a tank destroyer group somewhere on the Western Front, Pfc. Winton entered service on Nov. 15, 1943. Married, his wife lives at Waurika, Okla.
A former employee of Holt's Food Store in Borger, Pfc. Winton is the brother of Loyd F. Winton, Mrs. Estel A. Holt and Mrs. Cleo Taylor, all of Borger. Another brother, Lee Winton, lives at Fritch.

A message came from the War Department Wednesday of last week to his wife, Mrs. Nellie Ruth Winton, that her husband, R.J. Winton, was missing in action in Germany, to be followed with a second message Saturday that he had been killed, February 26. He trained in a tank battalion but was later transferred to the glider infantry. He was with the Third Army.
Pvt. Winton was a son of A. T. Winton of Waurika and was reared in the community southwest of Waurika. Prior to his induction into the Army he was employed at Halliburton's in Duncan. He enlisted in September 1943.
He is survived by his father, A. T. Winton, Waurika, his wife, the former Nellie Ruth King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. King, and a 6-month old daughter, Elizabeth Ann, whom he had never seen. Other surviving relatives are: three sisters, Mrs. Alice Holt of Borger, Texas; Mrs. Elizabeth Newberry of Hastings; Mrs. Walter Kafer of Waurika; two half-brothers and one half-sister, Loyd Winton, Leland Winton and Mrs. Cleo Taylor of Borger, Texas.
On receipt of the sad news, the sisters came from Borger to be with their father, returning the first of the week accompanied by Mr. Winton, Mrs. Kafer and Mrs. R.J. Winton and baby daughter.

Previously reported as "missing in action," a story of this report was carried in the Herald Friday. Pfc. Winton had been missing since February 25 in the European area.
Entering service on Nov. 15, 1943, he was sent overseas in July, 1944. His wife and six-months old daughter, Elizabeth Ann, whom he had never seen, live in Waurika, Okla.
A former employee of Holt's Food Store in Borger, his brother, Loyd F. Winton, sisters, Mrs. Estel A. Holt and Mrs. Cleo Taylor, live in Borger. Another brother, Lee (Leland) Winton, lives at Fritch.
