John Madl, Sr., prominent North Mission farmer, died at his home in the community Saturday evening following several years illness. He had been in failing health for the past five years and had been bed fast for several weeks.
Mr. Madl came to the United States from Bavaria, Germany in 1868 with his parents and crossed the Atlantic in one of the early-day steamboats. He was born March 16, 1860 in Germany and emigrated to America. On the difficult voyage over the Madl family lost one child who was born and died at sea. Coming to Kansas soon after they arrived in this country, the family settled at Edgerton and on October 30, 1882, John Madl married Molly Schoenhofer. The couple moved to near Eudora where they lived until 1906 when they moved to St. Paul.
In his early life in this community Mr. Madl was one of the active and progressive farmers and stockmen. During the latter part of his life since his health has been impaired the farm has been operated by his son, Louis. The Osage Mineral well located on the farm has attracted many to his place and the healing qualities of the mineral water are known for miles around.
He is survived by his widow and nine children. Henry of the home; Mrs. Emma Kasberger, Eudora; Mrs. Harry Miller, ElDorado; Ernie , St. Louis; The Rev. Ferdinand Madl, C.P., DesMoines; John Jr.; Will, Herbert and Louis, all of rural St. Paul. One son, Frank died in 1910 and one daughter Mrs. D.C. Bohnsack died in 1931.
