Born at North, S. C., Nr., Furtick entered business with his father there and later moved to Columbia about 1899 and entered business here, establishing a large department store on Main Street in the location now occupied by Haverty Furniture Company.
Since that time his family has lived here and become prominently associated with the civic, religious and cultural life of the community. In later years he was in the wholesale dry goods business.
A member of Trinity Episcopal Church, in which he was deeply interested, especially in view of the long service by Mrs. Furtick as a leading soprano, Mr. Furtick was a mandge of strong personal and convictions and at the same time of a kind and lovable disposition. He leaves many friends who mourn his death.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Mary Furtick Connor, one son, Edward C. Furtick of Sumter, three sisters, Mr. L. K. Etheredge of near North, Mrs. T. J. Walker and Mrs. Frank C. Hoefer of Columbia and two grandchildren, Eve and Mary Whitney Furtick of Sumter.
Funeral services will be conducted at McCormick's Mortuary at 3 o'clock this afternoon by the Rev. Louis Melcher, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
