When Fred was a child his family headed west to the Dakota Territory. They lived in Lincoln and Pennington Counties in the 1880's, returning to Minnesota in the early 1890's. They lived in southern Minnesota, near the Iowa border, in the vicinity of Spirit Lake, IA and Loon Lake, MN.
Fred's main occupation was farming, but he and his brothers also picked up various odd jobs, sometimes working as teamsters for various freighting outfits, or trapping, to make ends meet.
Fred married Myra Brown on July 13, 1892 in Minneota twp., in Jackson County, MN. The wedding ceremony was conducted by the methodist minister. Fred soon became a solid member of the local Baptist church. Fred & Myra had three children together before he passed away: Ira, Addie, and Blanche (Alice).
Fred passed away on March 5, 1897, at his farm, near the Loon Lake settlement, in Jackson County, due to consumption and stomach ailments. He was preceeded in death by three siblings. Fred was survived by his wife and their three young children, his parents, six brothers, two sisters, one niece, and one nephew.
