Lydia Lovell was born on Sep 10,1846, near Cincinnati, Ohio, to Lyman & Clarissa Lovell. Lydia was a pioneer who spent most of her life moving west, making it at least as far as the Black Hills in SD, before returning to Minnesota, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Her family first moved to Stueben County, Indiana, but after a short time removed to Minnesota, living at Pickerell Lake, in Freeborn County. Her father and his family moved in 1866 to lot 1, section 2, township 180 (Winona County), but by then Lydia was already married.

She married Benton Cooley in Estherville, Iowa on Sept 28, 1863. Benton and Lydia had 10 known children: William, Eugene, Fay, Fred, Mary, Nellie, Thadeous, Bert, Artie & Arthur. Two more children, names unknown, were also born to the family. It is presumed that they died in infancy.

The family resided near Faribault, MN for a number of years before moving to the Dakota Territory. Benton filed a land patent in the Sioux Falls Land Office in March of 1881, on land in Grant Township, Lincoln County, Dakota Territory, near the village of Lennox. Arthur, the youngest of the family's surviving children, was born near Rapid City, SD in 1889.

When Benton's health began to fail the family returned to Minnesota, living near the settlement of Loon Lake, in Jackson County. Lydia's hymnal from Loon Lake is inscribed on the front cover: "Mrs. Lydia Cooley, Loon Lake Minnesota, 1891". The family remained there for several years. 1897 was a bad year for Lydia. She lost her son, Fred, to consumption and a stomach ailment, and Benton passed away just before Christmas.

Benton passed away in Estherville, Iowa. Most of the children were already grown by the time of their father's death; only Bert and Arthur would have still been in school. Lydia left the younger children in the care of her daughter, Mary, and her husband Morris Floyd, while she found work as a housekeeper.

Lydia soon married again, to Myron Deuel. It was not long, however, before she was alone again. By 1905 She had relocated to Newport, MN. Living with her in Newport were her sons, Eugene, Arthur, and Bert; two daughter-in-laws, Bertha and Charlotte; and two grandchildren, Thad & Charlotte's children, Glen and Mary.

By 1908 Lydia had again relocated, to Brainerd, MN. She lived in NE Brainerd with Arthur, who was working at the RR shops. Lydia also owned a property in SE Brainerd, near the shops. After selling these properties she bought a farm in a rural community, then called Dykeman (Pine Center), about 20 miles southeast of Brainerd.

Six of her surviving children joined her in Crow Wing County before her death: William, Eugene, Mary, Thad, Bert, and Arthur. They were among the early setttlers of the township. Lydia's father, Lyman, also lived with Lydia in Dykeman (Pine Center).

Lydia passed away at the age of 70 at her home in Pine Center, MN. At the time of her death, she left eight living children, and 21 grandchildren to mourn her passing. She was laid to rest in the family plot in Dykeman Cemetery next to her father, who had passed in 1914.
