Benton & Lydia lived near Faribault, MN for several years, before moving to the Dakota Territory. They returned to Minnesota about 1891, living near the Minnesota-Iowa border around the settlements of Loon Lake, MN, in southern Jackson County, and Spirit Lake, IA.
Benton passed away in Estherville, IA on Dec 22, 1897. It is believed that he is interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville, in a plot deeded to his son, Fay Cooley.
