Richard W. Bassett, 85 passed way August 18, 2010, after an illness of several months. Bassett was a lifelong resident of Alexandria where he was born on April 30, 1925. He was the third son and fourth child of Roscoe Owen and Grace (Lee), Bassett.
Known as "Wayne" to family and friends, he served his country in World War II as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the 2nd Marine Divison, 3rd armored amphibious battalion as a tank driver. He saw action in the Pacific theater including the battles of Peleliev and Okinawa.
After the war, he returned to Alexandria with his wife, Phyllis (Gosnell) Bassett whom he married on July 12, 1943. The couple had two children, Sherry (Crist)Bassett and Dennis (Susan) Bassett.
Wayne began work with Aladdin Industries, eventually moving to Triangle Tool in Elwood where he was employed as a plant manager. In 1966, he went into business for himself by founding Bassett Machine and Tool on Clinton Street. He owned "the shop" until 1993 when he sold it, and transitioned to semi-retirement.
After the sale, he began working for R&R Engineering in Summitville where he was part-time until 2007.
Wayne was an avid Alex Tiger fan and also followed the Indiana Hoosiers and the Cincinnati Reds.
He was grandfather to five: Michelle Crist Wells, Brett (Kim) Crist, Marcy (Tom) Blee, Valerie Bassett, and Richard (Tracy) Bassett; and great-grandfather to 8; Derek and Drew Wells, Hunter and Hannah Crist; Patrick and Suzanne Blee, Alyssa Clark and Keira Bassett.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Sherry Crist; his parents; his brothers, LeRoy and Earl; and sister Helen Peters.
Funeral services took place Saturday, Aug 21 at the Owen Funeral Home, 412 North Harrison Street, Alexandria with Pastor Jerry Young officiating.
Interment followed in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, with military honors by Elwood VFW Post 1552.
