Phyllis Ann Gosnell Bassett, 91, passed away unexpectedly at her home Saturday evening, Nov. 19, 2016.
Phyllis, an Alexandria native, was born on Sept. 3, 1925, the daughter of Floris Louella Mitchell and Edgar Earl Gosnell. She was a graduate of Alexandria High School, Class of 1943.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Richard "Wayne" Bassett, on July 12, 1943, in Tipton, while he was on home on leave from training with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. She followed Wayne for a year to San Diego, where he completed his training before the couple settled permanently in Alexandria. It was in San Diego where Phyllis began her career with the Sears and Roebuck Department store that lasted over 40 years, retiring in 1993. She loved being involved in the lives of her grandchildren and great-children, as well as reading mysteries and making her annual trip to Punta Gorda, Florida.
Phyllis was mother to Sherry Bassett (Mike) Crist, who preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1989, and Dennis (Susan) Bassett of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also survived by a sister, Kay Gosnell (Gene) Street of Ashland, Kentucky. Phyllis was grandmother to five grandchildren: Michelle Crist Wells of Elwood, Brett (Kim) Crist of Cicero, Marcy (Tom) Blee of Fort Wayne, Valerie Bassett of Fishers and Rich (Tracy) Bassett of Fishers. In addition, she is survived by nine great-grandchildren: Derek Wells, Drew Wells, Hunter Crist, Hannah Crist, Patrick Blee, Suzanne Blee, Alyssa Clark, Keira Bassett and Alexandria Bassett.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Sherry Bassett Crist; her husband of 67 years, Richard "Wayne" Bassett, who died on Aug. 18, 2010.
Services honoring Phyllis's life and legacy will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria. Pastor Jerry Young will officiate. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery at Alexandria.
Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Tuesday prior to the services.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alexandria-Monroe Public Library through the funeral home.
