Helen M. (Bassett) Peters, 92, Alexandria died Jan. 28, 2010 at Community Northview Care Center in Anderson following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 4, 1917 in Alexandria to Roscoe O. and Grace (Lee) Bassett. She resided in Alexandria all of her lifetime.
Helen was a graduate of Alexandria High School Class of 1934.
She was the oldest living member of the Alexandria Church of God. She had served on numerous church boards, Missionary Society, taught Sunday school for several years and was elected to a national office on the Church of God Board of Christian Education. She was named Woman of the Year in 1984 at her church.
She had worked for Madison County Abstract and Title Company in Anderson in her younger days. More recently she had worked at the former Leewin Floral Company in Alexandria for 43 years. When her late husband Charles served on the Alexandria Fire Department, Helen was active in the Fire Department Auxiliary.
Helen loved to crochet and knit. She had made hundreds of lap blankets for nursing home residents. She also made infant blankets that were sent to American Indian missions.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Lemon, Alexandria; grandchildren, Michael Lemon, Alexandria, Erin (Chris) Hubbard, Brownsburg, Scott (Jenny) Peters, Geneva, Craig Peters, Belling-ham, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Wesley Timmons and Bennett Hubbard; brother, Wayne (Phyllis) Bassett, Alexandria; former daughter-in-law, Neva Peters (Amos) Schwartz, Geneva; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Charles Peters in 1994; her son, Terry Peters in 1981, brothers,Earl Bassett and LeRoy Bassett ; and a son-in-law, Gene Lemon in 2006.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at the Alexandria Church of God. Interment was in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexandria Church of God through the funeral home.
