Reverend Joe Glisson, 74, passed away on Tuesday September 4, 2012. A celebration of Joe's life will be held in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Saturday, September 8, at 1pm with Reverend Jim Crandall officiating. The family will be receiving friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Joe was born April 21, 1938 in Daisy, GA to the late John B. Glisson and Nancy Cora Durrance.

In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by three sisters and 6 brothers.

He is survived by his son, Marty Glisson and his wife, Karen of Bluffton, SC; a daughter, Nicole Anderson and her husband, Mike of Valencia, CA; two grandchildren, Jake and Sarah Anderson, also of Valencia, CA; two sisters, Freida Chandler and Nira Stephens of Atlanta; his best friend and loving companion, Mary Fisher, of Brunswick, and many nieces and nephews.

Joe graduated from Claxton High School in Claxton, GA and knew at that time that he had been called into Ministry. He attended Middle Georgia College where he was named to the All-American Football team as a quarterback. Joe went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Tampa, where he also played football. After graduating, he became a teacher and coach with Butler High School in Augusta, GA. He then attended Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he received his Master's Degree in Divinity. After graduating, he became Pastor of the Corinth Baptist Church in Oxford, NC. After leaving NC, Joe pastored in various churches in GA before settling on St. Simons Island to Pastor the First Baptist Church of St. Simons in 1980. In 1982, Joe was chosen as the first chaplain of Southeast Georgia Health System and spearheaded the pastoral care program; he served as the director of pastoral care until retiring in 1998.

In his spare time, Joe also enjoyed keeping active by playing tennis, jogging, working in his yard, and refinishing furniture.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made Heartland Hospice, 122 Scranton Road, Brunswick, GA 31525 or the Alzheimer's Association of Glynn/Brunswick, Inc., 2803 Sherwood Dr., Brunswick, GA, 31520.
