Elmer Aseltine 87 of Gallatin formerly of Laredo passed away Saturday August 18, 2012 at his daughter's home in Gallatin. Graveside Memorial Services will be held at the 2:00 p.m. Sunday September 9th at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Lardeo. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Advantage in care of the Funeral Home.
Elmer was born May 8th 1925 to Frank and June (Glover) Aseltine in Charlotte, Michigan where he attended elementary and high school. He worked at the local grain elevator as a truck driver where he delivered coal and grain to the community. Elmer was united in marriage to Grace Bergman August 9, 1942 in Charlotte. They had a son, John, and they were expecting their second child when he was drafted in the US Army during WWII. He served his country for two years serving under General Patton as a supply driver. He drove all over France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany. He witnessed the devastating effects of war.
After being discharged from the military, the family grew to four children. Elmer worked for several years at the Eaton Manufacturing Company in Battle Creek, Michigan as a machine operator. In 1962, Elmer and Grace purchased a 120 acre farm near Remus, Michigan where the couple cash cropped and raised hogs. In the early 1970's the couple sold the farm and lived various places in Michigan before moving to Laredo, Missouri in 1995 to be near family due to Elmer's failing health. Following their auction in Laredo, they moved to Gallatin in April 2011 staying with their daughter, Elaine.
Elmer was a "jack of all trades" who enjoyed remodeling old houses around the country side. In the early years he enjoyed deer hunting and was viewed as an outdoorsman. In the early 1960's he raised red worms for his bait shop. "Three hundred for a buck!" he would say. He took pride in his vast collection of lures and fishing equipment. Elmer was an avid fisherman; he fished numerous lakes in Michigan and hit all the ponds in this part of Missouri that he could find. He told stories how he could hook the big ones when everyone else in the boat was being "skunked."
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Cecil and John George Aseltine, sister; Irene Van Liew, son; John Rae Aseltine, and granddaughter; Sarah Jane Fox.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Grace, of 69 years. Daughters; Dale Marie (Larry) Stenberg of Lynden, WA, Elaine Kettring of Gallatin, son; David (Sally) Aseltine of Northwood, New Hampshire. Elmer has 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
