Reverend Willis was a Methodist-Episcopal minister in Deer Creek area and Roseburg, OR. He also farmed his Donation Land Claim #45 (now numbered as DLC #221-1852) which he acquired in 1852.

The 1850 Census shows the family living in Rochester, Andrew Co., MO. They had two children at that time, Benjamin F. (4 yrs) and Mary C. (1 yr). Interestingly, they lived between a lawyer and a physician. William was farming at this time.

In 1852, as part of the largest migration to the West, William and his family joined his wife's family, the James Gilmores in the trek West on the Oregon Trail. They departed Ft. Hall, using the Applegate Trail to arrive in Douglas Co., Oregon Territory. William and wife Virginia Caroline are listed in the 1852 Oregon Emigrant Register.

By the time of the 1860 census, the Willis family were fully settled in the Deer Creek Valley, in Douglas Co. Oregon.

1860 U.S. Census, Roseburg Precinct:

William Willis M 18y Missouri
James Willis M 15y Oregon
Horace Willis M 11y Oregon [John]
Sarah Willis F 8y Oregon
Eliza Willis F 4y Oregon
Wilson Willis M 8m Oregon

Since there is no further record of "Horace" and John Andrew Willis was b. in 1859, it's possible they are one and the same. And "Wilson" is Edgar Wilson Willis. And "Eliza" is 1880's "Ella".

The 1870 Census shows the Barker, Cox, Lane and Willis families living next door to each other in the South Deer Creek vicinity (east of Dixonville).

1880 U.S. Census for Deer Creek Precinct, Douglas Co., Oregon (Roseburg P.O.):
William A. Willis, 58 yrs,
Virginia C. Willis, 54 yrs,
Willard Willis, 29 yrs,
Mary Willis, 20 yrs,
Andrew Willis, 21 yrs,
Ella Willis, 15 yrs,
Edgar W. Willis, 11 yrs,
George Laramour [Larimore] 23 yrs,

Virginia C. Willis was a Gilmore. Her parents, James and Mary Gilmore, came out to Oregon in 1852 and registered Donation Land Claims out in the now-known Dixonville area (South Deer Creek Precinct). Mary Gilmore was a Poteet, the sister to George Larimore's grandmother, Mahala Poteet McGee; Mahala's daughter, Sarah McGee Larimore, was George C. Larimore's mother. Thus, Virginia Gilmore Willis and George C. Larimore were cousins.

George Larimore is the Contributor's grandfather.
