James was born at home on North Deer Creek just east of Dixonville. He died of typhoid fever. Oregon was still "Oregon Territory".

His uncle, Matt Gilmore, with his wife and children, came out to the Oregon Country in 1843 in the Applegate Bros. wagon train. He participated in the formation of the Oregon Territory and then the creation of the State of Oregon in 1859.
