Springport, Michigan

Age 87 died, Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, MI. Born April 15, 1924, on the family farm in Clarence Township one of seven children born to Emil and Emma (Roseneau) Schmidt. George was foremost a farmer his entire life but he also had worked as a bus driver and a custodian for the Springport Schools. He also worked for several years at Springport Steel. A member of the Springport United Methodist Church and a former president of the Springport Men's Club. George enjoyed the livestock auctions and tractor pulls at the Calhoun County Fair. Preceding him in death was his wife Virginia in 2004; son-in-law, Michael Zenker in 2011; brothers and sisters, Julius, Walter, Herbert, Irene, and Mabel.

Surviving are 4 children, Diane (Larry) Ellis of Ponderay, ID., Donna Zenker of Albion, Debra (D.J.) Barr of Charlotte and David (Karen) Schmidt of Springport; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Marjorie (Chuck) Short of Albion; sisters-in-law, Greta Anderson of Battle Creek and Nancy Helzerman of Barryton; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 12, 2012, at 11:00 AM at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Melissa Claxton officiating. Burial will follow in the Clarence Center Cemetery in Clarence Township.


parents: Emil August Schmidt b.11/16/1878 and Emma Henriettta Wilhelmina Roseneau b.4/15/1890. married Virginia Louise Anderson on 4/15/1950. Children: Diane, Donna, Debra, and David.
