Retired Sciotoville Merchant Passes Away at 83

Theodore Q. Shump, 83, retired mercantile and real estate operator, resident of Sciotoville the last 36 years, died at 3 p.m. Friday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Hutchens, 5701 Gallia street, Sciotoville.

Mr. Shump was confined to his home since Tuesday and death was attributed to Bright's disease and infirmities. He had been able to be up and around most of the time and a week ago last Friday was downtown with his daughter.

He was a widely known resident of Portsmouth and Sciotoville, and was a life-long resident of Scioto county. Mr. Shump was a staunch Republican, was a Mason and a member of First Christian church where he served on the official board. Of late years, Mr. Shump attended Second Presbyterian church.

Mr. Shump retired from active business 10 years ago. For the last two years he had been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter.

He was born May 13, 1856, in the Sunshine community, Scioto county, a son of John and Mary Isabel Marting Shump. He was the last survivor of a family of six children. A twin brother, Frank Shump, was killed about 35 years ago in an accident.

Mr. Shump was married 57 years ago to Serena Farney, who preceded him in death in 1925.

Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Hutchens; two grandsons, Richard Bennett of Chillicothe and
Howard Hutchens of Sciotoville. , An only sister, Mrs. Mary Weeks, died last year.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Windel-Howland funeral home. with Rev. Crayton S. Brooks of Sciotoville Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the old mausoleum at Greenlawn cemetery.

The body will be taken to the Hutchen's home at 10 a.m. Sunday and will be returned Monday morning to the funeral home.
