Ben was the son of James Williams and Mary Cooley. Ben grew up near "Perry's Corner" near Rolling Prairie, in Kankakee Twp.

He enlisted on 9 Sept 1862 as a private in the Indiana 21st Light Artillery Battery, along with his older brother George. in Sept 1863, Ben fought in the Battle of Chickamauga in Walker County, Georgia - one of the last major Confederate victories. Ben mustered out on 26 Jun 1865 at Indianapolis, although his health never fully recovered after the Civil War.

Ben married Esther Teeter on 5 Apr 1868 in La Porte County, Indiana. They lived on their farm in Galena Twp, north of Rolling Prairie, just south of the Bunker Hill schoolhouse, where Ben died.

- Michigan City Dispatch, Galena Gleanings, Thursday 07 March 1895:

"News comes to us that Mr. Benj. Williams, who lived near Bunker Hill schoolhouse, is dead. We did not learn anything more concerning the death. We are very sorry, as Mr. Williams was an honest, quiet citizen and a good temperance worker, and will be missed by many."
