son of Juho Mattsson Luokkala and Johanna Andersdotter Kallio, John was a immigrant from Finland. He had come to American with his mother and sister at age 12, sailing on the ship S.S. Vancouver which left Liverpool on May 17, 1900 and arrived ten days later in Quebec, Canada. A month later, the three of them are found living with relatives in Norfolk, MA, with the Haloka family in the 1900 census.

John married Hilda Lydia Pera on 01 Jun 1911 in Carlton Co., MN. She was a daughter of Finish immigrants, Henry Pera and Johanna Gustaava Muotka. They would have 14 children, all born on their farm in Carlton County: Albin, Hilma [called Hanna], Helmi [called Pearl], Oscar, Arthur [died infant], Esther, Elsie, Lillian, Hans, Dorothy, Walter, Marjorie, Ruth and Dale. Hans died in the war. The other twelve all eventually migrated west to the Clark-Cowitz Counties area of Southwest Washington.
