William Duval Cardwell (UVa. Law 1889), second son of Judge Richard Henry (1846-1931) and Katherine Howard Cardwell (1839-1909), was born April 12, 1868, in Rockingham, N.C. He was an attorney in Richmond, Va. and served in the Virginia Legislature, 1899-1906, (speaker in 1906). He married in 1890, Jane Price Gregory (1868-1937), daughter of Dr. Thomas L. (1826-84) and Sally Pendleton Winston Gregory (1837-1916), of Hanover Co., Va. Their six children were Elizabeth Rosser (1891-1981); Sarah Pendleton (1892-1981); William Howard (1894-1972); Richard Henry, II (1898-1982); Dorothea Price (1903-70); and Edward Gregory Cardwell (1906-78) who married Virginia Bagby Vaughan (1915-84).

Elizabeth "Elise" Rosser Cardwell (1891-1981) married in 1918, Robert Waller Marye (1891-1978) and lived in Wilmington, NC. Two daughters were Elizabeth (1928-) who married Haywood Clark Emerson (1919-2007); and Jane E. Marye (1930-2006) who married Arthur H. Livermore (1915-2009).

Sarah Pendleton Cardwell (1892-1981) married in 1916, Rev. Alexander Campbell Tucker (1890-1978), of Farmville, Va. Their daughter, Mary Jane Tucker, married Galen H. Lutz. Children were Carlisle and Janet Leigh Lutz.

William Howard Cardwell (1894-1972) lived in Richmond, Va. and married in 1917, Dorothy McCaw Fox (1897-1967), daughter of James M. (1854-1913) and Jennie D. Fox (1857-1937), of Richmond. Their daughters were Virginia Gregory (c1919-), Elizabeth Pendleton (1920-2001), and Dorothy Fox Cardwell (1922-95) who married Charles Joseph Besenfelder (1914-90), of Richmond. The other daughters married A. G. Eldridge, and Thomas Cartmel Brown (1910-2004), of Blacksburg, Va.

Richard Henry Cardwell II (1898-1982) married (1) in 1921, Annie Belle Thomas (1898-1969), daughter of Emmett W. (18767-1935) and Stella P. Thomas (c1875-1958), of Richmond. Two sons were Richard Henry, III (1924-2014) who served in WWII, and Com. Emmett Thomas Cardwell (1929-2002)(Randolph-Macon 1951) who retired from the Coast Guard. The latter married, and their children are Janet Dale who married in 1987, Christopher Schreiber, son of Frank Henry Schreiber, of Mercerville, N.J.; Ann Winston; and Thomas Michael Cardwell. Richard Henry Cardwell III (1924-2014) married Margaret Crockett Harvie (1925-2020), and their children are Virginia Lewis who married Robert Rutherford Rosebro; Richard Henry, IV who married in 1987, Carol Jones Cockburn; and Edwin Kent Cardwell who married in 1988, Lisa Dorothy Collins, daughter of Gene Magee Collins. Richard H. Cardwell II (1898-1982) married (2) in 1971, Kathryn Heitshu (1906-95).
