Charles Patteson Cardwell's mother was Katherine "Kate" Howard (1839-1909), eldest daughter of Edward Calthorpe (1817-85) and Lucy Florence Crump Howard (1818-54, who lived at Prospect Hill near Hanover Courthouse, Va. She married in 1865, Judge Richard Henry Cardwell (1846-1931), son of Richard Perrin (1808-46) and Elizabeth Martin Dalton Cardwell (c1812-), of Madison, N.C. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature, 1882-94, Speaker of the House, 1887-94, served on the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, 1895-1916, and served in the Civil War in the infantry of the Army of Northern Virginia (CSA), 1864-65. His father was a member of the North Carolina legislature for many years. Their seven children were C. Howard (1866-76), William Duval (1868-1954), Lucy Crump (1870-1956), Elizabeth Dalton (1872-1936), Charles Patteson (1874-1941), Kate (1875-1924) and Julia Seaton Cardwell (1877-1961).
Kate Cardwell (1875-1924) married attorney Edmund Winston (1863-1951) and lived in Ashland, Va. Their sons were Edmund, Jr. (1902-68) who married Caroline H. (c1900-); and Walter Pendleton Winston (1904-37).
Julia Seaton Cardwell (1877-1961) lived in Bon Aire, Va. She married Albert Gallatin Williams, Jr. (1876-1946). Their daughter, Anne Kennon Williams (1908-84), was an English teacher in Richmond.
